About this landmark

Durrës Medieval Hamam

The Medieval Hamam of Durrës is one of the most valuable monuments of Ottoman cultural heritage in the city and one of the few surviving hamams in Albania. It has been declared a first-category Cultural Monument and represents a clear example of the tradition of public baths that dominated urban life during the Ottoman period in the Adriatic.

The Hamam is located in the southeastern corner of the city of Durrës, near the “Epidamn” Boulevard and close to the Venetian Tower, being easily accessible to visitors. It was built in the 18th century, during the period of urban and cultural expansion of the city under Ottoman rule.

The building is characterized by the main dressing area covered by a hemispherical dome about 5.8 meters high, equipped with small square windows around the perimeter, which provided natural lighting and ventilation. Around this room were heating and washing facilities, where the floors were heated by potassium steam coming from the oven at the back, according to the traditional technique of Ottoman steam baths.

The hammam represents a continuation of the Roman and Byzantine baths, further elaborated with Ottoman architectural elements, such as the use of running water and internal heating structures — typical of the public cleansing culture of the period.

The building suffered significant damage after the 2019 earthquake, like many of the city's historical monuments. It was subsequently restored with the support of the European Union through the EU4Culture program, and opened for the first time after decades of closure to domestic and foreign visitors in 2025. This restoration made it possible to integrate the hammam as a cultural and archaeological attraction in Durrës' tourist offer.

The Durrës Hamam represents an important testimony of urban and social life during the Ottoman period, testifying to the influences of historical cultures in Albania and the traditions of urban coexistence. As one of the few surviving hamams in the country, it offers a journey through time, where visitors can understand how such structures served as social and hygienic centers for the communities of the time.
