About this landmark

Amphitheater Chapel

Within the structure of the Durrës Amphitheatre, the largest Roman monument in the Balkans, a small Paleochristian chapel has been discovered, testifying to the gradual transformation of ancient public spaces into Christian cult environments after the closure of gladiatorial spectacles in the 4th century AD. The Durrës Amphitheatre was separated from its original use and a chapel was built in the second half of the 5th–6th century, serving for ceremonies of daily life and funerals of the early Christian community in this area.

The church is decorated with frescoes and decorative mosaics, which help to understand the sacred aesthetics and early liturgical practices. Through the phases of intervention, experts have identified that it was used continuously in the Byzantine period of the early Middle Ages, although later constructions and finds indicate that cult functions were preserved in this part of the amphitheater even later.

In the archaeological context, this chapel presents a rare testimony of the historical coexistence between Roman culture and early Christianity, representing a sacred space within a previously profane building. It is one of the main stops for visitors exploring the Durrës Amphitheatre and highlights the shifts in belief and social functions that this monument has experienced over the millennia.
