About this landmark

“Fatih” Mosque

The “Fatih” Mosque (also known as the Small Mosque or the Old Mosque) is one of the oldest monuments of Islamic worship in Albania and one of the main historical sites of the city of Durrës. It preserves great historical, architectural and cultural values, testifying to the rich heritage of the coastal city.

The mosque was built between 1502–1503, immediately after the Ottoman conquest of Durrës in the early 16th century, and is named after Sultan Mehmet Fatih (Mehmed the Conqueror) — one of the most prominent figures in Ottoman history.

Its construction was carried out on the ruins of an early Christian basilica, so today's walls preserve fragments of brickwork, the northern arcades and a western wall reconstructed with the technique of cloisonné dating back to the 13th–14th centuries. Unlike many other Ottoman mosques that are characterized by traditional domes, the Fatih Mosque is covered with a tiled roof, making its architectural form distinctive and special. It has a quadrangular plan and a minaret rebuilt in a simpler style after the communist period, as the original collapsed during the years of the atheist regime in Albania.

In 1973, the “Fatih” Mosque was declared a Cultural Monument of the Republic of Albania, an official certification of its value as an important historical and architectural object. Today, the mosque continues to serve as a place of worship for the Muslim community and is one of the most visited historical attractions in Durrës, thanks to its strategic location near the Roman Amphitheater, the Durrës Castle, and other monumental structures.

In addition to its religious function, the Fatih Mosque represents a journey through history, reflecting the interweaving of cultures and historical periods in a city that has been a bridge between East and West. It is a reference point for visitors who want to understand the development of Islamic traditions and the urban structures of Durrës in past centuries.
