About this landmark

Kraljeva Sutjeska Monastery

Kraljeva Sutjeska is one of those places where history does not speak loudly — it whispers from every stone, from every corridor, and from the threshold of every entrance. Located in the municipality of Kakanj, this small settlement in the valley of the Sutjeska River was, in the 14th and 15th centuries, one of the strongest centers of cultural and political life in all of Bosnia — the seat of the Bosnian kings Tvrtko II and Stjepan Tomaš of the Kotromanić dynasty, a place where foreign diplomats were received, state documents were signed, and fateful decisions for the kingdom were made.

Some fifty preserved historical documents record Sutjeska as an active royal seat — the royal court built for Ban Stjepan II Kotromanić in the first half of the 14th century is today a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and its preserved walls still stand as silent witnesses to former power. Alongside the court, Kraljeva Sutjeska hides several more treasures in a small area — the Franciscan monastery with the Church of St. John from the 14th century, one of the oldest mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina, built according to legend in just a few days on the orders of Sultan Mehmed II in 1463, and the House of Ivo Dusper, the oldest house in central Bosnia from the early 18th century, declared a national monument. Kraljeva Sutjeska is not a tourist attraction — it is a living open-air museum of Bosnian statehood.
