About this landmark

Bazaar Mosque

The Bazaar Mosque in Gjirokastër is one of the city's most important monuments and a symbol of the Ottoman heritage in Albania. Built in the mid-18th century by Memi Bey, it was erected in the center of the old bazaar after a great fire that destroyed the bazaar, becoming not only a place of worship, but also part of the city's commercial and social life. Its distinctive architecture, with its square hall covered with a dome and the characteristic minaret, reflects the building style of the time, while the former shops below it indicate its economic function.

During the communist period, when religious belief was banned, the mosque survived the destruction by being used for cultural activities, which also contributed to its preservation. After the 90s, it resumed its religious function and underwent significant restorations to restore its appearance and historical role. Today, the Bazaar Mosque is one of the most visited landmarks in Gjirokastra and represents the harmony between the city's history, architecture and cultural identity.
